The final intergovernmental meeting on IPBES takes place in Pusan

In partnership with UNEP, the Ministry of Environment holds the final ad-hoc intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder meeting on IPBES in Pusan from June 7 to 11. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an international organization on biodiversity with the similar function to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Participants in the meeting are expected to be about 400 including representatives from 100 governments, international organizations such as UNEP, UNESCO, and IUCN, secretariats of diverse international conventions on biodiversity, and international private organizations.

As the final meeting before the establishment of IPBES, the meeting is expected to be an opportunity for participants to resolve their differences. In particular, in-depth discussion will also be made on the role of IPBES, its relationship with other international organizations on biodiversity, mechanism of decision making, budget and composing groups.

The Ministry of Environment will make every effort in hosting the meeting in a successful way so that stakeholders can reach an agreement on establishing IPBES. If an agreement is made at the meeting, the establishment of IPBES is expected to be confirmed through the 65th United Nations General Assembly, which is planned to be held at the second half of the year.
