The National Park Authority (President, Kim Jae Kyu) on 1st January 2006 implemented the sixth Rest Year System aimed at remediating some of the destroyed and damaged areas among Korean national parks.

Based on the results of the fifth Rest Year System, which concluded on December 31st 2005, twenty-nine areas in ten national parks will be measured under this system.

In order to elevate the enforcement impact of the Rest Year System, it has been arbitrated to extend the scope of animal habitats, colony of plants and other specific target areas.

Since the implementation of the long term Rest Year System, some satisfactory trails of 13 areas (totaling 73.6km) will be managed specifically as prohibited regions even after the period of the implementation of the Rest Year System has ended.

Therefore, the dimensions of this 6th Rest System will be increased from 721,997㎡ (4th Rest Year System) to 10,177,666㎡; however, in terms of distance, dimensions will be curtailed from 134.7km to 25.2km.

In addition, animal habitats, colony of plants, high moors, and the remaining damaged areas where important resources are distributed will all be particularly managed. Regarding the restored areas, the Rest-Year System will continuously promote the enforcement further to preserve natural resources and to improve the effective restoration of damaged areas.

With the object of protecting natural ecosystems, the National Park Authority will foster operating control towards illegal entering of restricted areas. Furthermore, the Authority declared that violators will be imposed to pay 500 thousand won in fines under the Natural Park Act.
