Domestic Company Inks KRW 101.6 Billion Contract for Saudi Sewage System Design

▷Kunhwa, participating in the Ministry of Environment’s Green Industry Alliance, finally selected as the design contractor for local expansion and improvement projects in three regions of Saudi Sewage Systems

▷Creating favorable conditions for domestic construction companies in the bidding process of the main project, estimated at approximately KRW 6 trillion

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Han Wha-jin) announced that domestic construction engineering company Kunhwa (Chairman Hong Kyungpyo) has been finally selected as the design contractor for three out of six regions in the expansion and improvement project of sewage systems in Saudi Arabia. The contract, worth approximately KRW 101.6 billion (290 million Saudi riyals), was signed on January 18.

The National Water Company (NWC) of Saudi Arabia, as part of the country’s top strategic initiative, Saudi Vision 2030, plans to invest the equivalent of KRW 32 trillion over 30 years until 2050. The NWC aims to completely overhaul the sewage system nationwide by dividing the land into six regions, totaling approximately 23 times the size of South Korea. As a result of this contract, Kunhwa will be responsible for the design of sewage systems in three of these regions. This positions domestic construction companies favorably for future bidding on the main project, which includes construction and implementation, estimated at around KRW 6 trillion. Usually, projects designed by companies from a particular country are better suited to be executed by firms familiar with the practices of that specific country.

Since January of last year, Kunhwa has been participating in the Green Industry Alliance, engaging in one-on-one strategic meetings with the Ministry of Environment to discuss tailored support measures. In May of the same year, Minister Han Wha-jin visited Saudi Arabia and held discussions with Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al Fadley, the Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia. The discussions focused on the local entry strategies for Korea’s sewage system design technology.

Minister Han Wha-jin stated, “The transformation in the Middle East is beginning with the green industry, and this change is creating opportunities for the overseas expansion of our green industry. By supporting the strengthening of domestic green industry capabilities, we will seize the opportunity for Korea to thrive once again.”
