Minister Han Wha-jin: "Preparing for Extreme Heavy Rain, We Will Ensure the Seamless Implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Flood Forecasting System by May This Year"

▷ The Ministry of Environment hosts demonstration event for artificial intelligence (AI) flood forecasting, checking accuracy and more with experts

▷ Preliminary flood analysis through artificial intelligence technology, cross-verification with flood forecast officials

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Han Wha-jin) will hold a demonstration of an artificial intelligence (AI) flood forecasting system at the Han River Flood Control Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of January 30.

The demonstration on this day will be presided over by Minister Han Wha-jin, with the participation of experts in the field of flooding and disaster prevention from academia and research institutions.

The Ministry plans to expand the operation of the big data-based artificial intelligence (AI) flood forecasting system. Starting from May this year, the system will be extended to 223 locations, including 75 main streams nationwide and their tributaries and streams.

During the demonstration event, the new flood forecasting system, based on artificial intelligence, will analyze the likelihood of flooding every 10 minutes for the significantly increased number of flood points, which is approximately three times more than before. The system will provide advance notice, and flood forecast officials will verify and issue flood s based on this new flood forecasting system.

The Ministry, in collaboration with experts, reviews the suitability of artificial intelligence training data and modeling, examining the accuracy of flood predictions. Additionally, discussions include the automation and streamlining of the flood issuance and dissemination system, taking into account the increasing number of flood points from this year.

Meanwhile, starting from May this year, the Ministry plans to send safety messages to citizens near flood points, providing information about their own location and areas prone to flooding. From July onwards, customized flood information will also be provided to drivers approaching flood points through navigation systems.

Minister Han Wha-jin of the Ministry of Environment stated, "This demonstration event is a simulated run conducted prior to the official operation of the artificial intelligence flood forecasting system for the first time this year. It aims to identify areas for improvement." She added, "Through future local government briefings and joint simulation exercises, we will ensure smooth preparation for on-site operation. We are committed to the stable operation of the artificial intelligence flood forecasting system from May this year."
