U.S. EPA announces the second round of grants for $352,000 of Innovation Pilots

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on May 19, 2003, that it plans to give the second round of grants for $352,000 of Innovation Pilots, a project to test innovative ideas to waste minimization, energy recovery, recycling and land revitalization that can be used by various industries, communities, and regions.

Among some of the new projects added to the Innovation Pilots are, product placement of environmentally beneficial behavior on TV shows, testing a market-based approached for reducing chemical use and waste at universities, and exploring an innovative approach to processing food waste and its potential renewable energy applications.

The Internet consultation on the Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restrictions of Chemicals (REACH)

Following the adoption of the White Paper, the European Commission's services have prepared a consultation document concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals(REACH) through the internet.

The purpose of the consultation is to assess the reaction of stakeholders on the Proposal, with regard to the workability of the system, including the technical requirements and the administrative procedures.

Internet Consultation of stakeholders on the Proposal for REACH will be conducted for 8 weeks, from May 16, to July 10, 2003.

Britain launches an informative website for endangered animals and plants

On May 20th, 2003, Britain has launched the "ARKive"(http://www.arkive.co.uk/news.html), a huge website designed to provide information about endangered animals and plants.

The ARKive is split into two sections, a UK chapter celebrating Britain's natural heritage, and a section for globally endangered species. Anyone can go into the site and have free access to information on natural world, and choose among the 500 audio and video 'portraits' of endangered animals.
