Ministry of Environment and UNESCAP to discuss sustainable development and environmental cooperation

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Han Wha-jin) announced the meeting between Environment Minister Han Wha-jin and Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). The purpose was to discuss ways to strengthen environmental cooperation. The meeting was held at the Han River Flood Control Office (Seocho-gu, Seoul) on the afternoon of October 24.

Through this discussion, the Ministry plans to strengthen cooperation in the Seoul Initiative Network on Green Growth (SINGG) project and prevent air pollution in the Asia-Pacific region. In cooperation with UNESCAP, the Ministry will also explore ways to improve air pollution in Asia and the Pacific by sharing best-policy practices and technologies.

The Seoul Initiative, the main agenda, is a multilateral environmental cooperation project proposed and promoted by South Korea and UNESCAP since 2005. The mission is to explore and spread sustainable development policies for the Asia-Pacific region based on Korea’s experience in economic growth and environmental preservation.

Minister Han Wha-jin stated, “The Asia-Pacific region is the most vulnerable to environmental crises, and our nations share a common destiny.” She continued, “We will use this meeting to enhance our environmental leadership in Asia and the Pacific."
