Water resources cooperation with Mekong 5 countires on the occasion of ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit

▷ Establishment and invigoration of research cooperation system for Korea-Mekong water resource management

▷ Activate the exchange of water sectors and successfully implement new southern policy by launching the Mekong Water Resources Information Capacity Enhancement Project and opening the Joint Research Center with Korea-US Joint Cooperation


Korea Water Resources Corporation (President Lee, Hak-soo) under the Ministry of Environment concluded the 'Korea-Mekong Water Resources Joint Research Cooperation Agreement' with nations in Mekong Basin* at BEXCO, Busan, on November 28 at 1 pm on the occasion of ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit.

The ministry held meeting for Mekong Water Resources (Data) Capacity Building Project* with over 100 experts in the related field, including NASA and the US Army Corps of Engineers at 2 pm.


* Korea-US joint cooperation project will jointly raise USD 1 million from 2019 to 2021 (three years) with the aim of improving the capacity of water resource information utilization and technology sharing in the Mekong region. Project shared by sharing


The Korea-Mekong Joint Water Cooperation Agreement will be concluded for research cooperation to reduce water disasters such as floods and droughts in the Mekong area and to strengthen the technical capacity of water resources management in the Mekong country.


The main contents of the agreement include ▲ information sharing and joint research on Korea-Mekong water resource management, ▲ establishment and operation of a joint research center to reduce water disasters and discussion of water issues in the Mekong region, and ▲ high-level meetings to establish strategies for responding to water disasters in Asia. ▲ holding joint academic conferences and exchange of experts for technology sharing.


Mekong Water Resources (Data) Capacity Building Project Meeting will discuss business pursuing direction and present business plans such as ▲ water resources information calculation and global observation technology using satellite information, and ▲ modeling technology using water fundamentals (mathematics) and floodgate models.


In addition, a special training program for Mekong Water Management will be conducted to strengthen water resource management capacity for 20 technicians and officials from five Mekong countries under the organization of Human Resources Development Institute of Korea Water Resources Corporation.


The Joint Research Center for Spreading Korea-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation will be opened at K Water Research Institute, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon at 11 am, on November 29th,


With the opening of the Joint Research Center, practical joint research and technology exchanges will be carried out, such as the exchange of researchers between Korea and Mekong. The education and training seminars for officers in Mekong countries and research cooperation projects will be carried out.


Lee Hak-soo, president of Korea Water Resources Corporation, said, "K-Water will contribute greatly to expanding the water resources and disaster management technologies needed in the Mekong region by strengthening Korea-Mekong water resource management research cooperation." It will expand cooperation with the country of Mekong with support."
