20th Anniversary of the ESG-ECO EXPO KOREA: A Glimpse at Green Industry and Consumption Activities to Address Climate Change

▷ Korea’s representative comprehensive environmental expo, featuring participation from 210 companies and institutions, opens on October 10 at COEX

Twenty years ago (as of 2004), there were about 23,000 green industry enterprises, which has recently (as of 2022) exceeded over 67,000. The total revenue of the industry has also grown about five times, from approximately KRW 21.4 trillion to KRW 105.1 trillion, and eco-friendly consumption activities have become noticeably more active.

The ESG-ECO EXPO KOREA, which allows us to see the current status of the country’s green industry and consumption activities at a glance, has now reached its 20th anniversary.

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Kim Wansup) and the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI) announced that the ‘2024 Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG)-ECO EXPO KOREA (ECO EXPO)’ will be held from October 10 to 12 at COEX (located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul).

The ECO EXPO started in 2004 under the name “Eco Products Korea.” It was then renamed to “Low Carbon Green Growth Expo” from 2009 to 2012, during its 5th iteration, and changed again to “ECO-EXPO KOREA” from the 9th edition in 2013, establishing itself as a comprehensive environmental fair representing our country. During this time, the increase in interest in carbon

neutrality across social and economic sectors and in corporate ESG practices has expanded the range of participating companies.

This year, a total of 210 companies and institutions are participating in the ECO EXPO, creating 410 exhibition halls in areas such as green products, ESG management, and eco-friendly packaging, showcasing the latest eco-friendly products, cutting-edge technologies, and policies.

As a side event, an ‘ESG Management Forum’ will be held for two days within the exhibition hall starting from October 10. The forum will share corporate management strategies and examples for responding to carbon trade barrier regulations in the international community, including the European Union (EU).

In addition, there will be counseling sessions for businesses aimed at expanding domestic and overseas market opportunities, including an overseas export consultation meeting (with participation from buyers from seven countries, including the United Arab Emirates), a public procurement consultation meeting, and a next-generation eco-friendly packaging consultation meeting. There will also be exhibition halls where attendees can directly experience green consumption.

Various exhibitions, lectures, and courses will be held daily from October 10 to 12, and participants can register for participation through ECO EXPO website (k-eco.or.kr).

Minister Kim Wansup stated, “The development of the green industry and eco-friendly consumption are among the key solutions to reduce climate change and environmental pollution.” He added, “The Ministry has significantly expanded the budget for supporting the green industry compared to last year, including the establishment of a KRW 140 billion green transition guarantee, and we will continue to spare no effort in supporting the green industry in the future.”
