Risk management of LMOs to be tightened

The Ministry of Environment and the National Institute of Environmental Research announced amendment to LMO safety management action plans, aiming at tightening risk management of LMOs (Living Modified Organisms).

 

The amendment includes the followings:

- Raise professionalism for risk assessment through checking assessment items and training judging panel

- Conduct R&D projects to supplement assessment methods

- Improve operation of the LMO Environmental Safety Center website (http://ecosystem.nier.go.kr/lesc) to provide more information to the public

 

 

Safety Management Outline

 

 

Based on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which was adopted in January 2000 to secure safety of transboundary movement of LMOs, the ministry enacted the Act on transboundary movement of LMOs in March 2001. According to the Act, the ministry made action plans for safety management of LMOs in July 2009.

 

The Ministry of Environment plans to make continuous efforts to prevent harmful effect of LMO on ecosystem through improving management system and developing management methods.
