SINGG Policy Consultation Forum for Climate Action in the Asia-Pacific Region

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Han Wha-jin) and the Korea Environment Corporation (KECO, CEO Ahn Byung-ok) will host the 18th Policy Consultation Forum of the Seoul Initiative Network on Green Growth (SINGG). The objective of the forum is to accelerate collaborative efforts from climate action in the Asia-Pacific region. The event will be held from October 25 to 27 at Hotel Naru Seoul MGallery (Mapo-gu, Seoul).

The Seoul Initiative was adopted in 2005 at the 5th Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development, which was co-hosted by the Ministry of Environment, the KECO, and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). The aim was to share policy cases tailored to the Asia-Pacific region based on Korea’s experience in sustainable development. SINGG Policy Consultation Forum invites high-ranking officials from countries in the Asia-Pacific region every year to explore sustainable development policies.

This will be the first face-to-face forum since COVID-19 and will focus on accelerating collaborative efforts in responding to climate change in Asia and the Pacific.

At the opening event on October 25, Vice Minister of Environment Lim Sang-jun will deliver a keynote speech highlighting Korea’s role as a ‘green ladder.’ This is to reinforce Korea's commitment to cooperate with countries in the Asia-Pacific region in responding to the climate crisis.

The event will feature discussions on △ National climate action strategies in the Asia-Pacific region and new projects and policy cases for carbon neutrality (Session 1), △Resilience improvement and adaptation (Session 2), and △ Financial support programs for climate action and green growth (Session 3).

On October 27, participants will attend a field trip to the Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corporation and Mapo Resource Recovery Facility to learn about resource circulation.

Vice Minister Lim Sang-jun stated, “Cooperating with countries in the Asia-Pacific region most severely affected by climate change is the key to solving environmental problems.” He continued, “Korea will actively play the role of a ‘green ladder’ as it collaborates with countries in the Asia-Pacific region to respond to the global climate crisis.”
