Ministry of Environment Operates Helpdesk to Support Businesses with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Han Wha-jin) announced that, in response to the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) taking effect locally from October 1st, the Ministry will open the “European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism Helpdesk (EU CBAM Helpdesk)” at the Korea Flour Mills Industrial Association (KOFMIA) Building in Jung-gu, Seoul on October 5th to support the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions for European Union export companies.

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is a system that uniformly imposes and collects carbon prices on imported non-EU products within the European Union. Companies that export six specific items*, such as steel and aluminum, to the European Union are required to report their greenhouse gas emissions generated during the production process through European Union importers.

* Steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizer, electricity, and hydrogen

The Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the National Institute of Environmental Research and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, produced and distributed guidelines in September of this year explaining the methods and procedures for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. However, in order to assist companies, particularly SMEs, with no prior experience in calculating greenhouse gas emissions, the Ministry has established the “European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism Helpdesk.”

This helpdesk will be operated by the Korea Environment Corporation and will provide ongoing one-on-one customized consultations.

The helpdesk, located on the 7th floor of the KOFMIA, operates from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. Both telephone consultations (☏1551-3213) and in-person consultations are available.

※ For matters related to whether a specific product falls under the EU CBAM product scope and reporting procedures other than emission calculation, advice can be obtained through the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH)'s Compliance in Advance and Supporting System (COMPASS) (compass.or.kr/ 02-2183-1515).

The Ministry of Environment additionally plans to produce and distribute explanatory guides on emission calculation methods for specific industries subject to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism until the end of the year. The Ministry will also organizeeducational workshops and briefing sessions to provide continuous support to our businesses, ensuring they face no difficulties in emission calculation and reporting
