Diverse Commemorative Events are Held on the Occasion of the International Year of Biodiversity

Commemorating the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity (IYB), the government plans to hold diverse nationwide events under the slogan, “Biodiversity is Life. Biodiversity is our life.”

The events will be organized by IYB organizing committee of ROK, which is composed of government departments including the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, and the Korea Forest Service, and other related organizations such as the National Institute of Biological Resources, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, and IUCN National Committee of ROK.

Following the launch of IYB organizing committee at the end of this month, several events will be held including the celebration ceremony of the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 20, exhibitions from October 7 to November 2, and the international academic symposium on October 9. In addition, international publicity will be conducted in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The Ministry of Environment plans to draft the Biological Diversity Act (tentatively named) and the master plan for preservation, management, and use of biological resources. The Ministry also expects these activities will contribute to increasing public interest and awareness on biological diversity and actively cooperating with the international community in preserving biological diversity.
