International Academic Conference for Paris Agreement Global Stocktake Held

On July 28, the Greenhouse Gas Comprehensive Information Center under the Ministry of Environment (Director Jeong Eun-hae) will hold the 14th International Greenhouse Gas Academic Conference at El Tower in Seocho-gu, Seoul. The conference will focus on the 'Global Stocktake (GST*) Prospects and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Implementation Status.'

* The 'Global Stocktake' is a process conducted every five years starting in 2023 to assess and evaluate the progress and implementation of the goals set under the Paris Agreement at a global level. It aims to examine the global efforts and advancements made towards achieving the objectives of the agreement.

The results of the first 'Global Stocktake' are scheduled to be adopted at the 28thConference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in November this year. Accordingly, this event has been organized with the purpose of examining the comprehensive results of the 'Global Stocktake,' which assesses the progress of the Paris Agreement goals worldwide. It will also focus on the country-specific detailed implementation plans and key insights to achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets by 2030.

During the opening ceremony, Joo Dae-yeong, Deputy Secretary-General of the Presidential Committee on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth 2050, and Kim Hyo-eun, the Climate Change Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will deliver welcoming remarks and speeches.

In this event, climate change expert Goncalo Cavalheiro will present an overview of the current discussions and trends related to the ongoing 'Global Stocktake' during the conference. Following that, Ali Waqas Malik, the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Pakistan, and Olia Glade, the Director of the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI), will present an overview of the efforts made by various countries to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Lastly, Professor Yoo Seung-jik from Sookmyung Women's University will present the current status of greenhouse gas reduction efforts in Korea.

In the subsequent panel discussion, led by Director Jeong Eun-hae from the Greenhouse Gas Comprehensive Information Center, the participants, including Professor Noh Dong-woon from Hanyang University, Lee Si-hyeong, the Head of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Professor Jung Tae-yeong from Yonsei University, and Choi Seon-du, the Head of the Reduction Target Team at the Greenhouse Gas Comprehensive Information Center, will engage in discussions regarding the implications and insights of the comprehensive global assessment process on Korea.

In addition, before the main event, a parallel session will be held in the morning, where experts from six countries - Bangladesh, Guyana, India, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, and Uganda - will share their experiences and limitations in establishing greenhouse gas emissions inventory systems in their respective countries.

The parallel session is jointly organized by the Greenhouse Gas Comprehensive Information Center and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat. It involves the participation of students from the 'International Greenhouse Gas Expert Training Course,' which has been in operation since July 10.

Jeong Eun-hae, Director of the Greenhouse Gas Comprehensive Information Center, expressed, "Now, the international focus on climate crisis response is shifting from setting goals to their implementation." She further stated, "As the achievement of the Paris Agreement's gradual greenhouse gas reduction aims to halt the rise in the global average temperature, which will be periodically assessed through the 'Global Stocktake,' we hope this event will serve as an opportunity to reaffirm our determination towards achieving our goals."
