The Ministry of Environment accelerates preparation for 2012 World Conservation Congress (WCC), which is to be held in Jejudo from September 6 to 15, 2012. Held every four years, WCC is the world’s largest and the most important conservation congress and aims at improving the way to manage natural environment for human, social and economic development.

Since Jeju was selected as the venue for 2012 WCC by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in November 2009, the Ministry of Environment has made continuous efforts to successfully host the congress by signing MOU with IUCN on March 4, 2010 and enacting Special Act on support of 2012 World Conservation Congress on March 5, 2010.

Following these efforts, the Ministry of Environment and the Korea National Park Service (KNPS) hold a workshop for making plans for 2012 WCC at KNPS on June 30, participated by 150 from academia, related organizations, and NGOs.

Participants will check the preparation made so far, discuss making plans and share opinion on building cooperation network among experts, industries, and organizations. The outcome of the workshop will be applied to master plans for preparing for and publicizing 2012 WCC.

During the second half of the year, the ministry plans to sign the second MOU with IUCN and organize support groups including organizing committee, working group and advisory committee.
