- Environment Ministers of the U.S.A., Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, England and other nations from European Union met in Canada to discuss World Summit on Sustainable Development. Main topics were "Environment and Development", "National and International Perspectives on Environmental Governance", and "Environment and Health". They agreed on using the private sector to help poorer countries, according to the Canadian newspaper "Globe and Mail".

- In addition, they agreed upon the necessity of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and stated that "For most countries, this means timely entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol, with many ratifications by the World Summit; for other countries, it means taking strong, realistic domestic actions" according to the "Banff Ministerial Statement on the World Summit on Sustainable Development".
