Regarding the voluntary agreement on reduction of promotional packing materials, which was made with 64 manufacturers and distributors in 2008, the Ministry of Environment analyzed the outcome and found that the volume of promotional packing material decreased from 6,618ton in 2007 to 5,842ton in 2009. In other words, about 780tons of packing materials reduced, which amounts to 3.5billion won.

Promotional packing materials are those which are unnecessarily added to a product in an attempt to promote purchase. Packing material for ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ promotion is an example.

Companies said they provided about one billion won of green mileage for customers when they purchase non-promotional products.

As packing materials reduction leads to cost reduction for companies and accumulation of mileage for customers, the Ministry of Environment plans to extend the green mileage point system.

Green Mileage Point System

Manufacturers

·Provide a part of saved cost of purchasing promotional packing materials for distributors

Distributors

·Provide green mileage for customers when they purchase a product of packing reduction campaign

Customers

·Use green mileage as cash when they purchase a product
