▷ Indonesia hosts, May 20-24: Introduction of Korean water policy by the Ministry of Environment

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Han Wha-jin) announced that it will participate in the 10th World Water Forum, held from May 20 to 24 in Bali, Indonesia, to showcase South Korea’s excellent water management policy examples and water-related technologies.

The World Water Forum is an international event organized every three years by the World Water Council* since 1997. South Korea previously hosted the 7th World Water Forum in Daegu and Gyeongbuk in 2015.

* The World Water Council (WWC) is the largest international organization in the water sector, established in 1996. It has over 400 member institutions, including national governments, academia, civil society organizations, and businesses. The current president is Lo?c Fauchon.

This event, themed “Water for Shared Prosperity,” is co-hosted by the WWC and the Indonesian government. Representing South Korea, Park Jae-hyeon, Deputy Minister of Water Management Policy Office at the Ministry of Environment, will lead the government delegation. The delegation includes representatives from Seoul Metropolitan Government, Daegu Metropolitan City, K-Water, Korea Environment Corporation, Korea Rural Community Corporation, Korea Institute for Water Technology Certification, Korea Institute of Hydrological Survey, and Korea Water Partnership.

First, on May 19, the Ministry and Indonesia’s Ministry of Public Works and Housing will host the “Korea-Indonesia Green Technology Exchange Seminar.” This event will invite Korean water companies, the Indonesian Water Supply Association, and local waterworks corporations.

At this seminar, the two countries will share their key water management policies and current status of water leakage management. In addition, five Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) will be signed between companies and associations from both countries, laying the groundwork for Korean companies to enter the Indonesian water supply market.

On the same day, Park Jae-hyeon, Deputy Minister of Water Management Policy Office, and Mochamad Basuki Hadimuljono, Indonesia’s Minister of Public Works and Housing, will hold a bilateral meeting to discuss expanding water industry exchanges between the two countries. They will also host a meeting with domestic companies participating in the World Water Forum to encourage their entry into the international water industry.

On the following day, May 20, the Ministry will host the 4th Korea-Japan-China Water Resources Ministers’ Meeting with Koyari Takashi, Vice Minister for Policy Coordination of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan, and Li Guoying, Minister of Water Resources of China.

This meeting will produce a joint declaration aimed at enhancing cooperation by sharing major water management policies and technologies of each country under the theme of “Climate Change Adaptation and Resilient Water Infrastructure Development.”

※ The Korea-Japan-China Water Resources Ministers’ Meeting has been held every three years since 2012, coinciding with the World Water Forum.

Furthermore, on the same day, the Ministry will sign MOUs at the Republic of Korea Pavilion, operating during the World Water Forum, to expand international cooperation in the water sector with international organizations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Mekong River Commission. These agreements aim to continue joint research to strengthen water management capabilities in developing countries.

Park Jae-hyeon, Deputy Minister of Water Management Policy Office, stated, “Through participation in this World Water Forum, we will endeavor to strengthen cooperation in the water sector with the international community, contributing our best efforts to address water issues worldwide.”
