Gathering Domestic and Foreign Climate Adaptation Experts for Science-Based Climate Crisis Management

▷ National Institute of Environmental Research to host international symposium on science-based climate crisis adaptation


The National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER, President Kum Hanseng) under the Ministry of Environment will hold an international symposium on “Science-based Risk* Assessment and Management for Climate Crisis Adaptation” at the Nine Tree Premier Hotel L’Escape in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, on June 14.


* Representing the interaction of causality, exposure, and vulnerability resulting from climate change impacts.


This event has been organized to facilitate international cooperation, where experts from Europe, Japan, and other countries will participate to share developments in science-based climate risk assessment tools and platforms, as well as strategies for supporting policy decision-making.


The event, divided into two parts, will feature presentations and discussions on the following topics: Part 1 focuses on the development and utilization of tools/platforms for climate risk management and adaptation, while Part 2 addresses policy decision-making through science-based climate risk and resilience assessments.


In Part 1, officials from institutions such as the NIER, Japan National Institute for Environmental Studies, Netherlands Climate Adaptation Services, and Deltares will present on the current status of climate risk assessment tools and platforms in their respective countries. Discussions will also focus on the direction of climate risk assessment and management in South Korea. 


In Part 2, representatives from institutions such as the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria, EURAC Research in Italy, the European Climate Change Centre for Southern Europe and the Mediterranean in Italy, and the German Climate Computing Centre will present case studies and insights on climate risk and resilience assessments from their respective countries. 


Following these presentations, the subsequent discussions will focus on exploring science-based policy decision-making approaches tailored to the circumstances in South Korea.


Yoo Myeong-su, Director General of Climate and Air Quality Research Department at the NIER, stated, “This event serves as a significant platform for exploring global strategies in climate risk assessment, management, and resilience enhancement. The discussions held here are expected to be valuable for informing science-based adaptation policy formulation.”
