On November 28, the National Institute of Environmental Research (President Geum Hanseung), under the Ministry of Environment, signed a memorandum of understanding for collaboration in the field of air quality research with Rajabhat University at the Chalermprakiat Building, located in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Rajabhat University is one of the institutions participating in the Pandora Asia Network*, established and operational in Southeast Asia for the validation and utilization of data produced by geostationary environmental satellites. * A ground-based remote sensing equipment network (Pandora) is currently operational in five countries at 10 locations (three in Thailand, three in Indonesia, two in Mongolia, one in Cambodia, and one in Laos) for the validation of environmental satellites and monitoring air quality in East Asia.

This memorandum of understanding focuses on sharing advanced atmospheric research methods from South Korea, particularly in the comprehensive and advanced three-dimensional monitoring system encompassing ground, high-altitude, airborne, and satellite measurements. The key components include discussions on exchanging research personnel and collaborative research based on shared expertise.

In addition, in conjunction with the signing of the memorandum of understanding, a workshop will be held on November 29 in Thailand to share information on the current status and key achievements in air quality research between the two countries. 

Yoo Myeong-su, Director of the Climate and Air Quality Research Divisionat the Ministry of Environment, stated, “South Korea possesses a world-class research capacity in the field of air quality.” He added, “Through active research collaboration with Southeast Asian countries that could influence air quality in South Korea, we aim to contribute to the overall improvement of air pollution in the Asian region.”
