Mid-and large-size vehicles are expected to emit less greenhouse gas than before

The National Institute of Environmental Research (President Seung-joon Yoon) launched a joint research with Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Ajou University on the utilization of greenhouse reduction technology for mid-and large-size vehicles.

The rate of mid-and large-size vehicles such as buses, trucks, and freight cars is only 5% but their greenhouse gas emission amounts to 33% of the total. Therefore, it is expected that significant volume of greenhouse gas can be reduced by applying the greenhouse gas reduction technology for mid-and large-size vehicles.

The greenhouse gas reduction technologies include a device which shows the most proper time to shift gear and technology to electronically control cooling fan. These technologies will be applied to CNG buses, measuring greenhouse gas reduction quantitatively.

As almost all mi-and large-size vehicles in Korea is equipped with manual transmission and mechanical cooling fan, fuel efficiency can be improved and greenhouse gas can be largely decreased by optimizing the time to shift gears and controlling cooling fan electronically.

In addition, the research is planned to include developing assessment mode to measure greenhouse gas emission quantitatively by analyzing driving patterns of urban buses.
