The number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses in operation reached 1,000 on Feb. 27, 2002. Korea is one of the few nations that operate large numbers of CNG buses, along with the U.S.A, Canada, Russia, and China. Seoul has the most CNG buses in Korea (377), followed by Daejon (105), Suwon (96), Daegu (88), Ulsan (62), and Jeonju (53).

Regarding this outstanding accomplishment, Minister Myung-ja Kim invited transportation companies and local governments to thank and encourage their efforts in supplying and operating CNG buses.

CNG buses do not emit any fumes and produce much less particulate matters and harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxide, leading to significant reductions in the ground level ozone formation. The Korean Ministry of Environment has been supplying CNG buses since 1998 with input from industries, academia, and research institutes.
