Korea and Vietnam Join Hands to Establish Vietnam Resource Recycling Industrial Zone

▷ Korea’s Ministry of Environment and Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment sign MOU for establishing the Vietnam Resource Recycling Industrial Zone (RRIZ) during bilateral prime ministers’ meeting

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Han Hwa-jin) announced that on the afternoon of July 2, during the Korea-Vietnam Prime Ministers' meeting, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) will be signed with the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for the establishment of the ‘Vietnam Resource Recycling Industrial Zone (RRIZ)’ in the presence of the prime ministers of both countries.

The Vietnam Resource Recycling Industrial Zone is a project being promoted under the leadership of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in response to the strengthening of domestic waste-related regulations.

This project was agreed upon as a bilateral cooperation initiative through the dispatch of the Green Industry Project Support Group (led by the Director General of Green Transition Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Environment) to Vietnam in March of this year. The signing of the memorandum of understanding on this day formalizes the cooperation between the two countries.

The Ministry of Environment plans to establish detailed implementation plans for the ‘Vietnam Resource Recycling Industrial Zone’ by the end of this year through a feasibility study support project for overseas environmental initiatives by its affiliated organization, the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute. In addition, it will formulate a master plan for the establishment of the recycling industrial zone, review the applicability of domestic and international recycling industrial zone case studies to the local context, and derive participation plans for investment and technological cooperation from domestic and international private companies.

The ‘Vietnam Resource Recycling Industrial Zone’ is a resource circulation complex involving both South Korean and Vietnamese local companies. It is expected to not only serve as infrastructure for the stable treatment and recycling of local waste but also foster mutual exchange with Vietnamese local companies and promote South Korea's excellent resource circulation technologies.

In addition, the ‘Vietnam Resource Recycling Industrial Zone’ is planned to be established in the northern region of Vietnam, where many major South Korean manufacturing companies are located. It is expected to transparently and safely handle industrial waste generated by these South Korean companies in Vietnam.

Minister of Environment Han Hwa-jin stated, “The signing of this memorandum of understanding has opened the way for the application of the excellent resource circulation technologies of Korea as a partner in sustainable green transition in Vietnam.” She added, “We will provide maximum support to ensure that the bilateral cooperation project on the resource recycling industrial zone becomes a leading example in the resource circulation sector in Vietnam.”
