Ministry of Environment implements tentative Yellow Sand Alert System (April 9, 2002)

Three different levels of Yellow Sand Alert (Alert, Warning and Strong Warning) will be issued in order to minimize damages and health problems from yellow sand phenomenon. In April 9, 2002, Strong Warning was first issued in all areas in Korea except Jeju.

Yellow Sand Alert will be issued when the hourly level of particulate matters exceed 300 micrograms per cubic meter, and respiratory patients, the elderly and children are advised to stay indoors.

Warning will be issued when the hourly level of particulate matters exceed 500 micrograms per cubic meter, and respiratory patients, the elderly and children are strongly recommended to stay only indoors.

Strong Warning will be issued when the hourly level of particulate matters exceed 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter. Kindergartens and elementary are recommended to close as well as respiratory patients, the elderly and children to stay only indoors.

Local governments issue the Yellow Sand Alert when the level of particulate matters are expected to exceed the alert level for more than 2 hours. The tentative Yellow Sand Alert System implements for year 2002 and will be reviewed improved in year 2003.
