Preparatory Working-Level Meeting Ahead of the International Meeting of Certification Authorities for Automotive Environmental Certification Involving Six Countries

▷ The 6th International Meeting of Certification Authorities for Automotive Environmental Certification to be held in South Korea in September, preparations underway


The National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER, President Geum Han-seung) under the Ministry of Environment announced that it will hold a working-level meeting via video conference on April 15 for the 6th International Meeting of Certification Authorities for Automotive Environmental Certification.


The ‘International Meeting of Certification Authorities for Automotive Environmental Certification’ was established to share trends in regulatory strengthening regarding automotive exhaust gas investigations and legal violations among various countries, following the Dieselgate* scandal in 2016. Meetings are held in major automobile-producing countries such as the United States, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and South Korea.

* Dieselgate: A scandal involving the manipulation of emission control devices in diesel vehicles to artificially increase pollutant emissions during real-world driving


The 6th International Meeting of Certification Authorities for Automotive Environmental Certification is scheduled to be held in South Korea (Seoul, specific venue to be determined) in September* this year. Ahead of this, the current working-level meeting will be attended by automotive environmental certification officials from six countries including South Korea, the United States, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada via video conference.

* 1st (2016, the United States), 2nd (2016, Italy), 3rd (2017, Japan), 4th (2018, Canada), 5th (2019, the United Kingdom), 6th (Korea, paused in 2020 due to COVID-19 and rescheduled after four years to September 2024)


The officials from six countries will discuss various regulatory trends during the 6th International Meeting of Certification Authorities for Automotive Environmental Certification, focusing on: Strengthened emission regulations such as EURO 7 in the European Union and CFR in the United States; Certification and post-management of zero-emission vehicles (electric and hydrogen vehicles); Regulation trends concerning non-exhaust pollutants (tires, brakes) and the entire life cycle assessment of automotive greenhouse gases. The attendees will engage in practical discussions regarding regulatory directions on an international scale.


Kwon Sang-il, Director of Transportation Pollution Research Center at NIER, stated, “Ahead of the International Meeting of Certification Authorities for Automotive Environmental Certification, which is being held after a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a meeting has been arranged for the key automotive production personnel from the six countries to share information on interrupted environmental certification in advance.” He added, “We will continue to communicate with major countries to ensure the success of this conference scheduled for September this year.”
