Participants in Carbon Point System Surpassed One Million

Participants in carbon point system, which rewards households, companies, or organizations that consumed less energy with points that can be exchanged into cash, gift certificate, or other incentives, surpassed one million, said Korea Environment Corporation on May 26.

Since the Ministry of Environment and local governments launched pilot carbon point system in November 2008, 232 local governments have taken part in the system as of March 2010.

Jointly operated by the Ministry of Environment, the Korea Environment Corporation, and local governments, the carbon point system is a program in which participants are provided with points in proportion to the amount of energy they saved. The points can be exchanged into cash, gift certification, parking pass, other incentives, according to each local government.

If a household with four members save 10% of 350KWh, their monthly average energy consumption, 172,100won can be obtained annually by reducing electric charges by 118,680won and gaining incentives of 53,420won. If one million participants save 35KWh of electricity a month, 178,080 tonCO2 of greenhouse gas can be reduced, which is amounting to planting 35,610,000 pine trees.
