Ministry of Environment to Host Greenhouse Gas Experts Training Program for Civil Workers from 27 Countries

The 13th International Greenhouse Gas Experts Training Program will be hosted by the Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Research Center of Korea (President Jeong Eun-Hae), under the Ministry of Environment, starting from July 10. The program will span three weeks and will be held at the Recenz Hotel in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul.

A total of 264 candidates from 83 countries applied to the program. Twenty-seven trainees from 27 key partner countries, including Bangladesh, Senegal, Uganda, and the Philippines, were selected. The selected trainees are responsible persons for greenhouse gas statistics in their respective government agencies and related organizations.

Eleven instructors will lead the program this year. They comprise Korean government workers, experts from academia, and responsible persons from greenhouse gas statistics-related organizations. Instructors from major international organizations, such as the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), will also join.

The curriculum includes: △ obligation of national reporting and review under the Paris Agreement; △ sectoral calculation and verification to establish national greenhouse gas statistics; △ instruction on using guidelines from the IPCC; and △ emissions projections.

In particular, Chairperson Kim Sang-hyup of the Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth will attend the July 10 enrollment ceremony. He will emphasize the importance of this program and give a lecture on Korea's 2050 carbon neutrality goals and green growth strategies.

Moreover, trainees will have the opportunity to share their experiences and limitations in establishing their own greenhouse gas calculation, reporting, and verification systems in their respective countries during the program. They will also visit facilities such as the Seoul Energy Dream Center and the Seoul Water Recycling Corporation to experience the technologies and learn about the case studies related to creating a low-carbon green city in Korea.

President Jeong Eun-Hae from the Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Research Center of Korea stated, "Starting next year, all UN member countries will be required to take part in an enhanced transparency system. That is, they will have to calculate the national greenhouse gas statistics and report to the UN." She added, "Accurate and streamlined reporting of greenhouse gas statistics is key to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. Against this backdrop, we will provide more training programs to enhance the reporting skills of the member countries."
