Ministry of Environment reported that manufacturing companies discharged 30,000 tons of 64 toxic chemicals into the air, rivers, and soil in 2000. According to the report based on a survey of 529 companies with more than 100 employees, 6200 tons of toluene, 3700 tons of Xylene, and 2600 tons of zinc compounds and other toxic chemicals are emitted, and 78.8 % of total were released into air. 86.3% of toxic chemicals were emitted from industrial complexes, such as Pohang, Yeocheon, and Ulsan complexes. By sector, chemicals (34.1%) and steels (26.2%) contributed to 60% of toxic chemical emission. Among 64 toxic chemicals released into environment, five carcinogenic compounds, such as benzene and vinyl, contributed to 8.3%(2500 tons) of total toxic chemicals. This report showed the numbers of chemistry and oil refinement industries increased by 23% compared to 1999; however, the emission reduced by 24% due to the industries' efforts for production process improvement and pollution prevention. 21
