Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Phase 1 is a 96 MW offshore wind farm located approximately 9 km off the coast of Jaeundo, Sinan-gun, and is the first offshore wind power project to be selected under the competitive wind power bidding system introduced in 2022.
This project is the first privately led offshore wind power project in Korea and is regarded as a model case in which various regulations and competing interests, such as military operations consultations and local community acceptance, were successfully addressed through public-private cooperation among the central government, local governments, and the project developer.
In addition, by being carried out as a community participation project, a portion of the power generation revenues is shared with local residents, and many local companies from areas such as Sinan and Mokpo took part in the construction process, making it a model of regional co-prosperity that demonstrates how offshore wind projects can contribute to revitalizing the local economy.
Minister Kim Sungwhan stated, “Offshore wind power is a key instrument for the transition to a decarbonized green civilization, and the completion of Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Phase 1 will serve as a catalyst for the future expansion of offshore wind power in Korea.” He added, “In line with the policy tasks set out in the plan to expand offshore wind infrastructure and deployment jointly announced by relevant ministries on December 10, we will faithfully implement these measures to accelerate the deployment of offshore wind power nationwide and actively support the industry so it can move into a phase of full-scale growth.”
