Han River Basin Environmental Office was established to manage the water quality of the Han River Watershed, in accordance with the Presidential Decree No.17959 (The Ministry of Environment and its subsidiary organizations) and the Ministry of Environment Ordinance No.142 (The Ministry of Environment and Its subsidiary organizations enforcement regulations). It tasks were integrated with the operations of Gyeongin Regional Environmental Office on January 4 2005 and reorganized and expanded to control the environment-related issues of the Metropolitan areas, in addition to its existing role to manage the water quality of Han river Watershed.
Han River Basin Environmental Office has promoted a variety of measures to improve water quality in Han River watershed such as reduction of pollutants, imposition and collection of water use charge, land purchase in Riparian Buffer zones and supports for the local residents in restricted areas. In addition, the office pursues economic development in the region in harmony with environmental protection through environmental impact assessment, as well as handles various environmental issues including waste management, management of hazardous chemicals and protection and management of wildlife animals and plants.
