MEV and MOLIT held a seminar on building a digital twin for the flood forecasting system

▷ The Ministry of Environment will improve the delivery system for flood-related information by realizing a digital twin

Sejong, October 19 - On October 18, the Ministry of Environment (ME, Minister Han Wha-jin) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT, Minister Won Hee-ryong) jointly held a "seminar on Utilization of Spatial Data and a Digital Twin." The seminar aimed to share relevant information for building the flood forecasting system around the Dorim Stream area. On August 23, the Ministry of Environment announced preventive measures against urban inundation and river floods. As a part of preventive measures, the ministry piloted to build a digital twin-based AI(artificial intelligence) flood forecasting system. A digital twin used for flood forecasting enables researchers to analyze and forecast expected weather conditions through a virtual world simulation where real-world weather phenomena and objects are represented.

The seminar was the first step in governmental cooperation to improve the delivery system for flood-related information. During the seminar, each ministry shared its ongoing projects and related information. The Ministry of Environment presented its "ICT smart sewage management system" using high-precision spatial information. MOLIT also shared its project to build a "virtual model-based intelligent river management system" in the city of Asan, which was a part of the pilot project of the digital twin. The two ministries plan to collect experts' opinions to continue cooperating on various projects.

Son Ok-ju, Director-General for Urban Flood Response, said, "The cooperation of the two ministries will be a significant example in building a flood forecasting system while the climate is changing rapidly worldwide. Through continuous collaboration, we will improve the precision of flood forecasting and ensure the golden hour to prepare for floods."
