▷ Adoption of the Ministerial Declaration and 26 resolutions calling for international innovation for sustainable consumption and production
The Ministry of Environment (Minister Cho Myung-rae) dispatched a government delegation headed by Park Chun-kyu, vice-Minister of the Ministry of Environment, to the 4th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) held at headquarters of United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya for five days from March 11 to 15.
Around 4,700 people including government delegation such as Minister and vice-Minister and corporate and civil society personnel from 170 UN member countries participated in the Assembly held under the theme of "Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable consumption and production*."
Participants expressed their appreciation for the need for innovative change to transform existing environmental destructive consumption and production models into sustainable ways through this Assembly.
As a result, the ministerial declaration collecting action statements from various countries, such as innovation and knowledge sharing for the management of chemicals and wastes, dramatically reducing the use of disposable plastics by 2030, and ensuring compatibility of environmental data among countries and 26 resolutions for environment policies such as "Building a sustainable infrastructure", "Activation of vehicles using clean electricity" and "Promotion of Innovative Solutions for Solid Waste Management".
The vice-Minister, Park Chun-kyu, the head of the government delegation, introduced Korea's excellent environmental policy, including green cards, to the international community through the national remarks at this Assembly, and emphasized the importance of joint countermeasures between national and international organizations to solve environmental problems such as trans-boundary air pollution, climate change.
The vice-Minister of the Ministry of Environment Park Chun-kyu met with newly appointed UN Secretary-General, Inger Andersen, and the Minister of Environment of Mongolia and Pakistan carried out diverse environmental diplomacy with discussion on the cooperation ways to promote green purchasing and share wastewater treatment technology.
In particular, The vice-Minister of the Ministry of Environment Park Chun-kyu held bilateral talks with Deputy Minister Zhao Yingmin of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China and confirmed implementation of the "promotion of Clean Sky Project" and "the composition of high-level policy consulting organization" and agreed that the two vice-Ministers will hold bilateral talks seeking ways to reduce air pollution.
