80% Cap on Output of 27 Thermal Power Plants in Gyeongsangnam-do, Chungcheongnam-do and Jeollanamdo.

The Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (Minister Sung Yun-mo) and the Minister of Environment (Minister Cho Myung-Rae) announced the enforcement of a thermal power generation cap tomorrow (Dec 22nd) following the enforcement of today (Dec 21st), in response to the high concentration of fine dust that has been seen on successive days.

* Enforcement Criteria: if a ultra-fine dust concentration level higher than 50/m3 is forecast for the following day on a day which triggers an ultra-fine dust alert, the power generation cap will be enforced.

This enforcement will limit the power generation output of 27 thermal power plants (13 in Gyeongsangnam-do, 12 in Chungcheongnam-do, 2 in Jeollanamdo) to 80% of their full capacity from 06:00 to 21:00 tomorrow.

Subsequently, the power generation output is expected to be reduced to 275.2 kW in total, and the ultra-fine dust reduced to 6.83 tons (8.8% of total emission from coal-fueled power generation per day).

Tomorrow is the start of the weekend, during which the power generation load is light with the usual lower demand. Therefore, the operation reserve is expected to remain stable even with the power generation cap enforced.
