▷ Minister of Environment Kim Eunkyung participates in the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development as a representative of S. Korea and introduces government’s effort to promote sustainability which includes the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), and an eco-friendly energy conversion.
July, 16th, 2018- The Ministry of Environment announced that Minister Kim will take part in the 6th UN High-level Political Forum as the chief delegate. The forum will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City from July 16th to July 19th.
The UN High-level Political Forum, established in 2013, is a meeting held at the UN headquarters in July every year to assess national progress on SDG implementation and provide international guidelines. In general, it is held as an annual ministerial-level meeting, but every four years, it is held as a high-level meeting for the Heads of State (the next Heads-of-State meeting will be held in 2019).
This year, under the theme of Transformation towards Sustainable and Resilient Societies, the forum will evaluate each member country’s progress in implementing the Six Sustainable Development Goals (Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Life on Land, and Partnerships for the Goals), and will compose a ministerial declaration.
As the chief delegate of the ROK, the Environment Minister will elaborate on a variety of measures taken by the Moon Jae-in administration in promoting sustainability across the country.
In particular, minister Kim will highlight the fact that such measures, including Korea’s Integrated Water Resources Management or IWRS and a transition to eco-friendly energy are in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Also, the minister will introduce Korea’s National Sustainable Development Goals or K-SDGs, which will be established within the year, based on public engagement and participation.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold two side events during HLPF 2018 to introduce the Korean government’s efforts towards a sustainable society.
The Ministry of Environment will hold the first event at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations office at 1:15 PM, July 16 (local time).
The event will introduce "the process for the participation of a wide range of stakeholders in the establishment of the K-SDGs". Also, the participants, including delegates from the international civil society organizations that contributed to the UN SDGs, will discuss ways to encourage the participation of civil society in the establishment and implementation of K-SDGs.
On the next day, the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs will hold the second event at the same time at the same location. For this event, successful examples of the public-private partnership will be introduced, including broadband Internet connectivity projects in developing countries by major Korean companies (such as KT and POSCO), and the Steel Village project (small scale steel businesses for each village).
Additionally, Minister Kim will meet the heads of the major international organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), to discuss practical cooperation measures to promote a change towards a sustainable society.
"The United Nations High-level Political Forum is a great opportunity for the Korean government to introduce a variety of innovative policies to build a sustainable society," stated the Environmental Minister. "Through the successful establishment and implementation of K-SDGs, we will do our best to make Korea a leading country in sustainable development."
