First Domestic Hydrogen Vehicle Transport Truck (Car Transporter) to be Showcased at Pyeongtaek Port

▷ Official pilot operation on 40 km round-trip route between Hyundai Motors Asan plant and Pyeongtaek Port starting in November

▷ Expansion of domestic hydrogen commercial vehicle supply expected to reduce port fine dust and air pollutants

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Kim Wansup) announced that the delivery ceremony for the nation’s first hydrogen vehicle transport truck (car transporter), which is about to be deployed on-site, will be held on October 28 at the Pyeongtaek Port Hydrogen Transportation Complex Base (located in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do).

Attendees at the handover ceremony will include Oh Il-young, Director General of the Air Quality Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Environment; Jung Jang-seon, Mayor of Pyeongtaek City; Hong Keewon, National Assembly member; Yi Byeong Jin, National Assembly member; Kang Jung-gu, Chairman of the Pyeongtaek City Council; Kim Suk-gu, CEO of the Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corporation; and Jung Yoo-suk, Vice President of Hyundai Motor Company.

The hydrogen vehicle transport truck (car transporter) pilot project is being promoted as a follow-up measure to the ‘Business Agreement* for the Creation of a Hydrogen Mobility Special Zone,’ signed on March 24, 2022, by the Ministry of Environment, Gyeonggi-do, Pyeongtaek City, Hyundai Motor Company, SK E&S, Hyundai Glovis, and Korea Gas Technology Corporation.

* (Objective) Establish a hydrogen mobility special zone centered on hydrogen commercial vehicles in Pyeongtaek → Contribute to carbon neutrality and the expansion of the hydrogen economy

The hydrogen vehicle transport truck (car transporter) was initiated by Hyundai Motors in January this year, based on the Xcient hydrogen electric truck, and received certification in October. It can load up to six vehicles simultaneously, offers superior power performance compared to diesel vehicles of the same class, and can travel 380 km on a single charge.

Hyundai Glovis, participating as the supervising company for the pilot project, plans to use the acquired vehicles to transport export vehicles over a round-trip distance of approximately 40 km between Hyundai Motors Asan plant and Pyeongtaek Port. During the six-month pilot project, the company will accumulate data to analyze total cost of ownership (TCO) and environmental improvement effects.

Hyundai Glovis is currently operating 1,132 vehicle transport trucks (as of the first half of 2024) and plans to gradually transition existing internal combustion engine transport trucks to hydrogen vehicles as part of its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy following the pilot project.

Oh Il-young, Director General of the Air Quality Policy Bureau, stated in his congratulatory address, “Converting long-distance vehicle transport trucks to hydrogen vehicles has significant environmental improvement effects, such as reducing fine dust and air pollutants.” He added, “We will actively support not only the production of hydrogen vehicle transport trucks but also the infrastructure for refueling to promote their distribution and adoption.”
