Third Public Policy Forum on Future Electricity Demand Outlook for 12th Power Supply Plan to Be Held

As part of establishing the 12th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand (hereinafter “the Plan”), which will serve as the foundation of national energy policy, a public discussion will be held to review the preliminary forecast of electricity demand through 2040.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment (MCEE, Minister Kim Sunghwan) and the General Committee for the 12th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand (Chair Jang Gil-su) announced that they will hold the third public policy forum at 10:00 a.m. on April 22 at the KOBACO Hall (2nd floor) of the Korea Broadcaster Center in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul.

* First session (Dec. 30, 2025: desirable energy mix); second session (Jan. 7, 2026: balanced use of renewables and nuclear power)

The electricity demand outlook forecasts the amount of electricity the country will use over the next 15 years and serves as the primary foundational data for establishing energy policy. Based on the projected demand, the required generation capacity and the scale of the transmission network connecting it are determined. In particular, the importance of precise demand forecasting has grown more than ever due to structural changes in electricity demand, including the expansion of AI data centers, the development of semiconductor clusters, and the acceleration of electrification.

The Demand Subcommittee under the General Committee for the 12th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand has, over the past four months, conducted nine rounds of in-depth discussions with relevant experts and derived a preliminary electricity demand outlook through 2040. In line with the principle of an open plan developed together with the public, this public forum has been organized to enhance transparency in the planning process and reflect public input. In addition to on-site attendance, the forum will also be livestreamed online.

* On-site attendance registration [Application period: Apr. 17 (Fri) 09:00 - Apr. 21 (Tue) 12:00 (event-us.kr/124324)
