The Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment (MCEE, Minister Kim Sungwhan) announced that, on the occasion of the summit held on April 1 between President Lee Jae Myung and President Prabowo Subianto, it revised and newly signed a total of three memoranda of understanding with Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Revision of the memorandum of understanding on environmental cooperation

This “Revision of the Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Cooperation” involves Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment and Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment, whose names have been changed*, revising and re-signing the memorandum originally concluded in 2021, as it is approaching its expiration in November 2026.

The revised contents expand the areas of cooperation by adding carbon reduction governance and strategic environmental assessment to the existing cooperation fields, including climate change, water resources, air quality management, biodiversity, soil restoration, and waste.

Memorandum of understanding on clean energy cooperation

The “Memorandum of Understanding on Clean Energy Cooperation” signed with Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources was concluded to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in responding to the climate crisis, enhancing energy security, and transitioning to clean energy. Through this agreement, the two countries plan to expand cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, nuclear power, clean hydrogen, energy storage systems (ESS), energy efficiency, batteries, waste-to-energy, smart grids, electric and hydrogen vehicles and charging infrastructure, and energy self-sufficient islands, while also exploring opportunities for overseas market entry in the clean energy sector through public-private partnerships.

Memorandum of understanding on cooperation in carbon capture and storage (CCS)

The “Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)” signed with Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources was concluded to achieve carbon neutrality in industries where greenhouse gas reduction is difficult through CCS technology, including strengthening cooperation in CCS technology development, cooperation on CCS commercialization, and initiating discussions on cooperation regarding the cross-border transport and storage of carbon dioxide. 

Through this, a stable foundation has been established for domestic companies to pursue overseas “new CCS projects,” including joint exploration of carbon dioxide storage sites. Beginning with the signing of this agreement, cooperation between the two countries in achieving carbon neutrality through CCS technology is expected to be further activated.
