International webinar opening for accelerating progress towards SDG 6

▷ Around 20 countries including Pakistan participating, kicking off discussions and presentations on the application, future and potential of SDG6 Policy Support System (SDG-PSS)


The Ministry of Environment (Minister Cho Myung-rae), in partnership with the Korea Environment Corporation (KECO, CEO Jang Jun-young), will be holding an international webinar (web-based seminar) for expediting the implementation of SDG 6 on 10th and 11th November at Sheraton D Cube City Hotel, Seoul.

※ Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) : The 6th goal (Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all) out of the 17 goals adopted by the UN General Assembly to be achieved by 2030 for sustainable development 


The online conference, co-hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Korea Environment Corporation (KECO), the UN Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) and the UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) will be held on the theme of "Lessons from the use of SDG 6 Policy Support System (SDG-PSS) to accelerate progress towards SDG 6".

※ SDG6 Policy Support System (SDG-PSS) : A tool, jointly developed by the MoE, KECO, UNOSD and UNU-INWEH, to collect and analyze data necessary for achieving SDG6 


Nearly 50 particapants from 20 countries including Pakistan, Tunisia, Brazil, Turkey and Madagascar are expected to join the event.


For the period of two days, (i) SDG-PSS application cases of regional hub countries in SDG 6 achievement and (ii) future courses for SDG-PSS to accelerate SDG 6 implementation will top the discussion.


On the first day of the event, the KECO, UNOSD, UNU-INWEH, the co-partners of the project, and Pakistan and Tunisia which are the regional hub countries of Asia and the Middle East will be discussing and delivering presentations on SDG-PSS application cases. 


In addition, the Ministry of Environment, and Brazil, Turkey and Madagascar, the regional hub countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and Africa will be having a debate on Korea's integrated water management and SDG-PSS application cases throughout  the next day's session.


The event is arranged as a web-based conference to practice social distancing for COVID-19 prevention.


Anyone can participate the webinar after submitting a sign-up by email to the UNOSD (youngeun.choi@ un.org) in advance. Should participants have any inquiries on the presentations after the seminar, they may ask them via email to the KECO (pja123@ keco.co.kr).


Dong-jin Kim, Director General of the Water Resources Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Environment said "The webinar will provide us with a precious opportunity not only to make progress in SDG 6 achievement but to ponder upon how to leave behind better sustainable water environment for the next generation."


Chun-kyoo Park, Head of the UNOSD, stated "SDG-PSS will gain traction thanks to the momentum generated by the upcoming online seminar since achieving SDG 6 by 2030 heavily depends on establishment and implementation of policies that are based on solid data."


Jang jun-young, CEO of KECO, said "The virtual conference will serve as a productive platform where countries' experiences with SDG-PSS application in achieving SDG 6 will be shared", adding "We will fully cooperate to promote the knowledge crucial to addressing water challenges confronting the international community."
