Learn chemical safety through a fun board game

▷ Game designed to teach children chemical safety in everyday life

Osong, March 14 - The Ministry of Environment's National Institute of Chemical Safety (NICS; President: Cho Eun-hee) developed a board game named "Wizard's Tower" to educate elementary school children about chemical safety. The game will be distributed to fifty-three elementary schools near the five major industrial complexes in Ulsan, Gunsan, Cheongju, Yeosu, and Seosan, starting on March 8. The 53 elementary schools are designated shelters in the event of chemical accidents involving industrial complexes. In July 2021, the NICS concluded a pilot project with five local governments, including Ulsan, to install chemical accident shelter signs in 100 places1. The new board game will be supplied to the elementary schools that participated in this pilot project.

"Wizard's Tower" aims to raise elementary school students' awareness of the danger of chemical substances and the necessary actions to be taken in the event of chemical accidents. The board game comes with dice, cards, and a gameboard for up to four players. The game is about a NICS agent on a mission to save citizens from wizards that use chemical substances for evil. Children can easily learn about chemical safety, which can be tricky for young learners while enjoying this fun game. Various forms of quizzes on chemical safety are available to solve with friends. The game also features teaching materials, videos, and worksheets on chemical disaster safety education for teachers.

Meanwhile, the NICS plans to offer a career exploration course under the theme of chemical safety for elementary school children this coming May via Ggoomgil (www.ggoomgil.go.kr), the Ministry of Education's career exploration website. The career exploration course will involve hands-on activities, including "Searching for jobs related to chemical safety," "Evacuation drills through virtual reality," and "Chemicals in daily life learned through board games."

"We will continue to develop and operate educational programs targeted at enhancing awareness on chemical safety for children and adolescents, striving to nurture a culture of chemical safety in society," said the NICS President Cho Eun-hee.
